Sally Peterson - Classic FM
.... a favourite of Robert Plant, Led Zeppelin
It was Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin who introduced me recently to the music of René Gruss during a radio interview on my show, "The Secret Fan" on Classic FM. This is a programme in which I talk to unlikely guests about their tastes in classical music. I asked Robert what was the last classical CD he had bought and he mentioned this album "Bellatrix" which he had picked up in Tower records a few years ago. He had thought it was stunning but knew nothing about the composer and so I asked listeners to contact me if they had any information about René Gruss. To my surprise and delight, I received a call from the composer himself, who had, contrary to all his usual habits, been listening to the programme and was amazed to hear his music played! He went out on a limb to produce Bellatrix, subtitled, 'To Woman', and used his own money to put out the CD. Gruss decided to go off to Prague with a suitcase full of scores and engage the Prague Chamber Orchestra conducting them himself even though he had never conducted before...........
